This article on British made clothes is very comprehensive – please give it a few seconds to load.

You may wish to use ‘find on page’ in your browser to help you look for something in particular.

I sense a revival of British clothes manufacturing. Much has gone, but there is still a fantastic choice of British made clothes out there, whether you want to spend a lot or not very much money.

Here you can find links and information, in no particular order, about British made clothes, for men, women and children. This article is ongoing and I will add to it when I discover more British clothes manufacturers and suppliers. Only companies that actually make or supply clothes made in the UK will be featured here, not simply companies that used to make clothes in the UK or are just selling clothes in the UK. The products I list here are genuinely made in the UK, not simply labelled to imply British heritage or manufacture.

Pet Products Made in the UK – British Made Pet Products and British Made Pet Food

Buying British made pet products (including British made pet food), especially from small local companies, supports British jobs, saves on transport (so it’s much better for the environment), and offers quality and flexibility. Plus the money circulates more quickly, supporting UK manufacturing and employment. Additionally the use of sweatshops and child labour in the UK is very unlikely.

In no particular order, here are some great manufacturers and suppliers of UK made pet related products:

Dober & Dasch is the relaunched dog collars brand of Mrs Bow Tie, part of the British manufacturer Threadster Group. Dober & Dasch sell dog collars, leads, harnesses, beds, coats, dog bow ties, dog bandanas, fabric dog toys, and dog themed cushions; all made in the UK. They say on their website “Dober & Dasch (pronounced Doh-ber and Dash) is a premium pet brand that is not only based in Britain, but makes everything here too” – https://www.doberanddasch.com

Avondale Textiles Limited of Morecambe, founded in 1983, trading as Avondale Pet Luxury have a little tagline at the bottom of their website saying “Avondale Textiles – Luxury dog and pet beds, mats & quilts | made in England.” They make car and dog beds and home furnishings such as draught excluders, cushions, pet beds, and pet cushions – https://www.petluxury.co.uk

Edge Beanbags (Muscava Limited trading as Edge Beanbags), beanbags, dog beds and Techbed mini beanbag technology stands, are made in the UK – you should check before buying as it is not clear from their website if some or possibly all  of their products are made in Britain. On their Facebook of their Techbeds it says “Produced in Wokingham, Berkshire” and their German made van pictured on twitter has the “Made in Britain” logo on the livery. On their website they say “From the Techbed Mini right up to the large Home Cinema beanbags, we source all of our materials here in the UK and put each and every piece together ourselves” – https://www.edgebeanbags.co.uk

HiK9 (aka The Original (KLM) Ltd) make raised dog beds and associated accessories. They do not provide any information about country of origin on their website but I am aware that at least some of their sewn products (cushions) are made for them by Vgtec Limited and these are probably made in Blackburn. I don’t know where the frames and mesh and canvas used by HiK9 are made. Ask before buying please – https://www.hik9.com

“All our Animology cat, dog and horse serums, shampoos, sprays and wipes are made right here in the UK” it says on the Animology website. They also sell dog collars, leads and harnesses and dog beds but no country of origin information is given for these products so I assume they will be foreign made; check before buying – https://www.animology.co.uk/

Mark + Chappell provide pet healthcare solutions, without the need for veterinarian intervention. Since 2013 owned by USA company True Science, they have a factory in Slovenia where I assume most of their products are made. However pleasingly their VetIQ Defurr-UM Hairball Remedy is still made for them in the UK.

Epiony sell a heat pad for animal and human use which made in Britain. They say on their website “We are supporting the British manufacturing industry and have had The Heat Pad made in Britain.” The sewn parts are sewn by Vgtec in Blackburn. The product itself has the words “Made in Britain” on the label. I don’t know who makes the the electrical parts or from where the raw materials are sourced. Epiony also sell a message mitt for horses but no country of origin information is given for this product and I assume it is foreign made – https://www.epiony.com/the-heat-pad.html

Fig bags are leather camera bags and camera straps and dog leads and dog collars that are made in England – http://www.figbags.co.uk

Hettie bags, accessories and pet products – tote bags, cross body bags, handbags, technology cases, and cosmetic cases in dot and square designs, some with with detachable flowers, made of wool made by Moon – are British made. Their sewing is done by Vgtec. They say on their website ” Our mission is to make fresh, elegant and simple accessories here in Britain that you’ll want to keep forever. We are proud to be British made”. They also say “A collection offering quality British made accessories inspired by classic traditional fabrics. We are family run and involved in our product from design to finish. At Hettie, we have chosen to make our products here in Britain from British woven wool. They are not mass produced or outsourced, but made by craftsmen and women with old fashioned attention to detail. We are proud to support British manufacturing and the British workforce.” They make dog coats, dog harnesses, dog collars and dog leads too. The company were newly formed in late 2015. Products are available from their website – http://www.hettie.co.uk

Berkeley Dog Beds have their Waterproof Orthopaedic Dog Beds, Raised Dog Beds, Wooden Dog Beds, Travel Dog Bed, Sheepskin Throws, Vet Bedding, Dirt Trapper Mats and so on all made in the UK. Berkeley Dog Beds products are basically all British made. The only product that they are not certain is British-made is their Dog Hair Removal Brush which they source from a UK wholesaler. I am grateful  to Berkeley Dog Beds for providing me with this information (in July 2018). The front page of their website says “Made in Britain” and has a little Union Flag logo and they say “all Berkeley dog beds are hand-made exclusively in the UK”. They also tell us on their website that “we only make British-made dog beds and bedding that we would be happy to buy and use for our own dogs” and “all our British-made dog beds are sourced from a small network of craftsmen and suppliers that share our views”. Berkeley Dog Beds is based near the village of Wherwell by the River Test in Hampshire – http://www.berkeleydogbeds.co.uk

Pet Mate, established in 1986, is an importer of products for pets and ponds. Their website mentions “…careful UK controlled manufacture” and at least some of their products, such as the automatic cat feeder pictured below, used to be UK made. However, unfortunately they no longer manufacture in the UK.

Broiler Equipment Company (BEC) are game rearing bird & poultry supplies owned by Osprey Limited and “with the emphasis on manufacturing in-house, many of these game rearing products are designed and produced in Osprey’s own factories here in the UK”. UK made products, such as their 25kg King Feeder Outdoor, are labeled as such on their website. Osprey has three manufacturing plants in the UK and also has products made in the Far East. Osprey products made in the UK, such as their tie wraps, are labelled as such on their website – http://www.bec.uk.com – http://www.osprey-plastics.co.uk

Classic drinking bottles are made in England by Caldex Ltd. They having been making these top quality animal drinking bottles in the UK since 1975. Their drinking bottles are suitable for small animals and I suggest also cats and dogs in their carriers (for example when transporting a cat by aeroplane). Their website is trade only but their products are available in good pet shops and in various online shops. They also sell other pet related products but, as no country of origin is given for any of these, I assume their other products are all foreign made – http://www.caldex.com

An online shop I found called Great & Small has a few British made products, such as dog and cat beds, hay for small animals which is farmed in the UK (not sure if it is packed in the UK or not), some British made pet bird food, and some guinea pig food. Most of the products on this website are foreign made though – http://greatandsmall.co.uk

The majority of products on this site are foreign made – http://www.clippersharp.com

Stubbs England (WB Stubbs (Hawksworth) Ltd) are stable and tack room equipment manufacturers. They say on the front page of their website “Stubbs products are made by Stubbs in England”. Stockists are listed on their website. They make a very wide range of stable related equipment. Unfortunately no country of origin is given against individual products on their website, so please ask where something you are interested in is made before buying as not all products this company sells may be British made – http://www.stubbsengland.com

Moorland Rider products for horse owners and riders sell a few British made products including a rider fly whisk or swish, a padded wash-bag for horse wash items, Equitie breakpoint horse tethers, and horse related greetings cards. Products are available through their website and at physical stockists. They do not give much information about their manufacturing and I don’t know if they manufacture themselves or not. Most products sold by this company are foreign made – http://www.moorlandrider.co.uk

Lancashire Textiles in Burnley seem to suggest on their website that all their Pillows, Mattress Protectors, Mattress Toppers, Towels, Home Accessories, Cushions, Pet Bedding, Bed Linens & Baby Bedding are UK made. I have emailed them to check this is the case (I’ve had no response though!) but I suspect it is only their bedding that is made in the UK and not their towels. Items made in Great Britain are clearly flagged with the Made in Britain logo; other products are foreign made. UK made products from Lancashire Textiles include some of their duvets, pillows, shaped pillows (such as v-shaped pillows), anti-allergy pillows, pillow protectors, some mattress protectors, a limited amount of their bedding, the Cavenagh of London ties they sell, some cushions, some cushion inners, some support cushions, their seat pads, some pet bedding, and their bean bags. Look for the Made in Britain logo on the Lancashire Textiles website; they a good range of Britain made products and they have their own mill in Lancashire. Products are availably directly from their website – http://www.lancashire-textiles.co.uk

The Tube seat fabric is known as moquette, a mix of wool with a small percentage of polyester, and well known for its hard wearing, durable, fire resistant and not-showing-the-dirt qualities, is still woven in Yorkshire. You can buy dog collars and coats using the fabric at the Transport for London museum, as well as furniture, cushions, technology cases, key rings, wash bags, etc made using moquette. The collars and coats are made in England by Matt Fothergill using moquette fabric. Whilst a lot of stuff in the London Transport Museum Shop is made in China, they do stock a very good range of UK made products too – http://www.ltmuseumshop.co.uk/moquette/pet-accessories.html

Phunky Pets is a website selling dog coats, collars, leads and bandanas. Their own range of dog coats are designed and made in the UK. They also stock made in London Hiro + Wolf collars and leads. Their other products are foreign made – http://www.phunkypets.co.uk

Cambrian Woollen Mill British wool woollen socks are fabulous. Medium weight (to heavy weight) I would say and plenty long enough, they are perfect for everyday wear with boots. Being 90% British wool they are as close as you can get to 100% wool and still retain some wear resistance. I got my green ones from Bison Bushcraft (see above). Based in Wales, Cambrian Mill design, weave and manufacture wool products, such as socks, purses, ties, dog coats, scarves, shawls, cushions, picnic blankets, blankets, throws, baby blankets, and Welsh tartan scarves – all made at their mill in Wales. Cambrian Woollen Mill is located just north of Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys. There is or at least was a Cambrian Mill Gift Shop & Heritage Centre and it seems at least part of the mill was up for sale during 2016. Very little information about the mill or the company is given on their website – http://www.cambrianmill.co.uk

Cheshire and Wain was set up in 2013 “to bring carefully British made products to the cat accessories market”. All their collars are made in London (the Colour-Pop range using Italian leather and the Limited Edition collars using British Leather) and incorporate a safety catch. The cat toys in are made in Dorset, the bowls in Cambridge and the sheepskin rugs are from the oldest sheepskin Tannery in the UK. Country of origin is not always clear on their website. For example they do not mention country of origin for their Italian leather cat collars (which are made in London) or where the components for the collars are made or where their ID tags are made, so as always it will be worth checking before buying. The collar hardware is in fact UK made (in Walsall) and the plastic safety catches are manufactured in America by Japanese company YKK. Some products are foreign made, for example their book of cat names is made in New England, USA – http://www.cheshireandwain.com

Zebedee’s Catnip Mice cat toy mice have the words “handmade in England” on their products and their website. They also say on their website “…our mice will continue to be proudly handmade in England.” Products are available in good pet shops and are not available from the company’s website. I found for example in the pet shop at Longacres Garden Centre in Shepperton (Charlton). Their mice are also available on sites like eBay and Amazon. Their products contain Catnip (Nepeta cataria). Zebedee’s Catnip Mice belongs to Mouse HQ Ltd – https://www.zebedeescatnipmice.co.uk

They are also agents for foreign made Staedtler Uhl pin products.  Trade only and they do not given any information about where about individual consumers can purchase their products from. J Clark and Company pet combs are distributed by HPP UK Ltd (see below) – http://www.jclarkandcompany.com – http://www.britishcombmakers.co.uk

HPP UK Ltd do not give country of origin for their products on their website or any information about where individual consumers can purchase their products from. They say on their website “The products that we do not import are manufactured in our UK factory…” – http://hppuk.co.uk

Ashley Craig, a company in the USA, sell what they describe as Greyhound Combs. These are metal pet combs made in England and finished (coated and engraved) in the United States. I am guessing they are made by J Clark (see above). Ashley Craig say all their products are produced in the UK, USA, or West Germany. It’s been some time since I last heard anyone refer to West Germany! Their website is rather confusing. They also sell some made in England choke chains and leads – http://greyhoundcomb.com

Pegasus Health manufacturers and sells horse supplements, equine glucosamine and herbs for horses into veterinary practices, racing yards, stud farms, tack shops and directly to customers via their web site. Not everything they sell is UK made but they do appear to label UK made products on their website. For example, they sell a British made horse first aid kit – http://www.pegasushealth.com

Catsan cat litter is made by Mars Petcare. Available in supermarkets. Clay or wood based.  No information about country of origin is given on their website. Catsan is manufactured worldwide and I don’t know whether any Catsan production takes place in the UK. It may not even say where it is made on the packaging. Thomas Cat Litter is apparently the UK’s No.1 selling branded clay based cat litter and is widely available. Again it is made by Mars Petcare and manufactured worldwide. I am not sure if any Thomas Cat Litter is manufactured in the UK and country of origin is not even given on the packaging.

Bestpets own label wood based cat litter is produced in the United Kingdom from 100% recovered sawdust. Bestpets do not generally give country of origin against products on their website, so I assume other Bestpets products are mostly foreign made – https://www.best-pets.co.uk/trade/cats/wood-based-litter.php

I am unsure if Bob Martin (see below) cat litter is made in the UK, so please check the packaging (hopefully country of origin is labelled on the packaging). It was apparently made in Cardiff and Yatton, but the Cardiff factory is due to close (as of January 2020) following the bankruptcy of Bob Martin (see below).

I am not sure if Greenwoods cat litter is made in the UK, but possibly not. Please check the packaging.

Does anyone know of any more UK made cat litter?

Bob Martin say they are “the UK’s leading brand name for pet healthcare”.  Their main manufacturing site and head office is in the South West of England and they have other manufacturing in the UK. The Bob Martin includes vitamin supplements for dogs and cats, de-wormers, shampoos and many different products to rid pets of ticks and fleas, cat litter, snacks, treats and pet accessories. For dogs, cats, small animals, birds and fish. Available in supermarkets and pet stores. Unfortunately country of origin is not given against individual products on their website. It is not clear that all their products are made in the UK, so please check the packaging. In November 2019 unfortunately Bob Martin went bankrupt. Pets Choice purchased parts of Bob Martin, including their factory in Yatton, Somerset but not their cat litter factory in Cardiff. Administrators PWC say (January 2020) that the Cardiff factory will close with a loss of 53 jobs. Bob Martin was the supplier of moist supermarket own brand cat litter and the bankruptcy led to shortages of own brand cat litter in supermarkets. In January 2020 Pet Choice said “Production at both UK Bob Martin factories has now recommenced, and normal supply should be available shortly” – with the closure of the Cardiff factory as stated by PWC supply problems may continue no doubt leading to more cat litter being imported rather than made in the UK. As of January 2020 Bob Martin continues to trade as Bob Martin – http://www.bobmartin.co.uk

Robinson Animal Healthcare is a long established manufacturer of animal first aid woundcare and absorbents, including market leading brands such as Animalintex and Veterinary Gamgee. Almost all Robinson Healthcare products are produced at a large UK manufacturing facility in Worksop, Nottinghamshire so there is a good chance that the product you want will be made in the UK. They sell veterinary wound care, veterinary bandages, veterinary absorbents, equine first aid, anti-bacterial wash and kennel and cage liners. Available at veterinary surgeries, pet shops, online, and via the Robinson Healthcare website (in bulk).

Johnson’s Veterinary make or import a multitude of products for cats, dogs, birds and small animals – worm treatments, insecticidal products, Pigeon Tonic, flea tablets, medicines, cleaning and hygiene products for pets, flea collars, grooming aids, shampoos, treats, seed bells, etc. The company were founded in 1921 and refer on their website “a purpose built manufacturing and distribution centre in Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands” where they are still based but is not clear if they still manufacture there themselves  or just have offices there. Country of origin is not given for products shown on their website. I am not sure of country of origin is given on physical product labels. Johnson’s have told me (5/5/15) that some of their products are still made by them in the UK, including some non-medicinal products, but that a large proportion of their products are outsourced and foreign made, including most products that are regulated by the VMD (Veterinary Medicines Directorate). Please ask Johnson’s about country of origin before buying their products – http://www.johnsons-vet.com

Carpenter, an American owned company, have a foaming plant Glossop in Derbyshire. Their Sleep Better range of mattress toppers, pillows and accessories “are manufactured in the UK” and their “Snugkids products are manufactured in the UK” (mattresses, sofas, chairs, bean bags and pillows for children). This only applies to products on sale in the UK generally, so check the label before buying. Some products are available for example from Tesco. Their Snugpets range of pet beds is “manufactured in the UK” according to their Snugpets brochure. Carpenter underlay is made in the UK and on their website section on underlay they say “Carpenter manufacture environmentally responsible products that are made in the UK”. I assume their other products are foreign made – http://carpenter.com – http://carpenterconsumer.co.uk

Dreamy Pet Products cat and dog igloo pet beds are made in Yorkshire, England. They have a ‘British made’ section on their website and sell a good variety of British made cat and dog beds. There is no suggestion on their website that they sell any more UK made products – http://dreamypetproducts.co.uk/product-category/british-made/

Let’s hope the new owners keep production of ChapelWood foods in the UK. ChapelWood sell feeds for all types of birds. Available in garden centres. I note country of origin information is no longer given on their website – http://www.chapelwoodwildlife.co.uk

Other Ernest Charles Co. products are foreign made. Ernest Charles Co. belong to garden products supplier Gardman, who amongst other brands also own The Garden & Home Co. whose doormats (available in garden centres) are made in the UK. Other Gardman products are often foreign made and do not state country of origin on them. Waitrose Garden Bird Food was labelled as produced in the UK in January 2016 but in March 2016 it was only labelled as packed in the UK (and is therefore foreign made but packed in the UK), so you need to check the packaging every time you are thinking of buying. Waitrose now have a policy of not labelling country of origin on most of their products which is most disappointing and by not labelling Waitrose is deliberately setting out to mislead their customers; some products though like the birdseed do still carry country of origin but if no country of origin is given please buy elsewhere – http://www.waitrose.com

Some other Westland products such as compost and garden seeds are also produced in the UK, but you will have to look at the packaging to see which. Some products may be foreign made. No country of origin information is given against individual products on any Westland websites and for example their bird feeders may be foreign made – http://www.bucktons.co.uk – http://www.naturesfeast.co.uk

Tom Chambers sell a range of garden products, garden furniture, wild bird care and food. They have their own factory in Yorkshire. Trade only but available in garden centres and the like. No country of origin is given against individual products and, whilst it would appear everything they sell is made in the UK from their website where it says made in the UK at the top of each page, I would not like to say this is the case as it is not explicitly stated that everything is made in the UK. Hopefully the physical products themselves are clearly labelled with country of origin – http://www.tomchambers.co.uk

Garden Bird and Wildlife Co sell some UK made suet balls and suet feeding logs, but everything else on their site is grown, made and packaged abroad I assume – http://www.gardenbird.co.uk

A Short Walk say on their website that all of their “Eco range products are made in the UK from recycled materials”. Country of origin is not given against individual products on their website though. Products are available from their website and include various bird feeders amongst their products like signs, bread boards, clocks. I assume clock mechanisms are foreign made and the products not in  their Eco range are foreign made. Also see Green and Blue below – http://ashortwalk.com/designs/

A Short Walk Eco Bird Cake Kit. Collected, recycled and remade in the UK

A Short Walk Eco Bird Cake Kit. Collected, recycled and remade in the UK

Green and Blue bird feeders, bird houses and bee houses are “made in England” according the front page of their website. Their story appears similar to that of A Short Walk above, in that the founders both used to work for Dyson (a company that makes vacuum cleaners and hand-dryers aboard) and the companies are both are based in Perranporth near Truro. I assume the two companies are connected in some way. Country of origin is clearly stated for individual products under ‘details’ – https://greenandblue.co.uk

With a few exceptions (which you can find by searching their website for ‘UK Made’), RSPB bird feed and bird feeders are foreign made. RSPB also have a few UK made nesting boxes and bird tables. Most RSPB products, disappointingly, are foreign made – http://shopping.rspb.org.uk

Supa Ltd (Supa Aquatic Supplies Ltd) say on their website that they are “proud of the fact that the majority of the products it produces are manufactured at its extensive factory in Sheffield from the finest quality raw materials.” For example, some of their wild bird feeders are manufactured in the UK (whereas others seem to be made abroad). Check products and see if they are labelled as being made in the UK – if not products are foreign made – no country of origin information is given against individual products on their website. Wild bird feeders, nesting boxes, bird baths, treat food for wild birds, aquarium and pond fish food, small animal dried fruit treats, etc – http://www.supa-aquatics.co.uk

Unipet International Ltd are a wild bird food manufacturer, specialising in suet-based products and poultry treats.  They have a factory in Kent and most of their products appear to be made in the UK. Burgess pet foods state on their website that they are “a leading UK manufacturer catering for the country’s top 9 most popular pets – dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, rats & ferrets”. The company were established in 1649 as a flour mill, in 1963 stopping flour milling and moving into animal feeds, and then in 1987 stopping animal feeds and moving into pet foods. On their website they do not actually say where they manufacture their foods, despite the little Union Jack image on the front of their packs. Burgess tell me (5/5/15) that they manufacture most of their foods themselves in Yorkshire and in another email of 7/5/15 that all their cat food is made by them in Yorkshire. Please check with the company or check the packaging to find out where a product is made before buying. On their packaging they say “Burgess products are manufactured in the UK” – http://www.burgesspetcare.com

H. G. Gladwell & Sons (Copdock Mill) are manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors of bird seeds, fishing bait and dog food. They say on their website “Today, we manufacture our own range of cage and wild bird mixes and seeds, small animal food, such as rabbit, guinea pig and hamster coarse feed, as well as fishing bait…We also have our own brands of dog foods”. So it appears this company make in the UK as well as importing, but unfortunately no country of origin information is given on their website or even on the products themselves, excepting their Brigadier’s Choice dog food (kibble and treats) which they say is “Made in England”. Generally then you will need to ask where their products are made –  http://www.copdockmill.co.uk

Wagg pet food appears to all be produced in the UK. Wagg makes a wide range of dry dog foods, cat foods, pet food suitable for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Gerbils and Mice and semi moist treats and crunchy biscuits for dogs and cats. Wagg Foods Ltd, founded in 1923, was known as Page Feeds and supplied animal feeds. They started to manufacture pet food in the 1980s. By 1990 they had stopped producing animal feeds for farming, changed their name to Wagg and moved to their current site near Thirsk. They say “We aim to source our core meat meals and cereals from local producers” and their website, and as far as I can tell all their products, have an oval shaped Union Flag icon and the words “Since 1923 – Made in the UK”. Products are available from their website via Ocado or Pets at Home and from supermarkets and pet shops – http://www.waggfoods.com

This means we have total control over every aspect of production from the sourcing of raw materials through to manufacture, distribution and most importantly quality control”. They also say “Wherever possible we use locally grown cereals. However, many of the ingredients we use, such as rice, are not grown in the UK and these are obtained from reputable sources in other countries. All meat sources are British”. Mars make many of their pet food and pet care products in the UK, but I am not sure which ones. Crown Pet Foods, part of Mars and the makers of Royal Canin and James Wellbeloved, have a factory in Castle Cary in Somerset for example. Pedigree are also owned by Mars. Other Mars brands include Whiskas, KiteKat, Cesar, Sheba, and Catsan. Mars pet care is based in Belguim. Unhelpfully Royal Canin cat food for example just says “made in the EU” on the packets, which is pointless and meaningless given how big the EU is. All James Wellbeloved dog, cat, and ferret foods are made in the UK. Does anyone know which other Mars pet food / pet care products specifically are made in the UK?

Iams is a pet food brand owned by Proctor and Gamble. In north America the brand belongs Mars since Prooctor and Gamble sold Iams, Eukanuba and Natura in north America to Mars in 2014. Iams and Eukanuba do not bother to give any country of origin information on their website and I assume they are foreign made.

Nestle owns Purina who market under names including Purina, Gourmet, Bakers Complete, Felix, GoCat, Winalot, Friskies and Bonio. Nestle pet division is essentially what was Spillers Pet Foods which Nestle bought from the now defunct Dalgety plc. Nestle / Purina / Spillers do not say where they make their pet foods, but they have factories in Aintree, Wisbech and Sudbury, so some of their pet food is still produced in the UK but I am not sure which. Nestle products are made all over the world, including in the UK. For example there has been a Nestle coffee production factory in Hayes since 1913 (it originally made chocolate when it first started and moved over to coffee production in 1939, having been purchased by Nestle in 1919) but during 2015 it was closed. Nestle’s Tutbury plant in Derbyshire and the Dalston plant in Cumbria continue to make coffee. Nestle still have factories in Girvan, Dalston, Fawdon, York, Halifax and Tutbury, Buxton, Welwyn Garden City, Bromborough, Sudbury, Wisbech, and Aintree; producing coffee, chocolate, water, pet food, etc. Unfortunately for the consumer Nestle have a policy of not labelling country of origin on their products, so you will not know where your chocolate / coffee / water / pet food was manufactured or if it was made in the UK – http://www.nestle.co.uk

Why not ask Mars, Proctor and Gamble, and Nestle about exactly where specific products are made. It might encourage them to label clearly.

Hills petted is an American company, owned by Colgate Palmolive. They are the makers of Science Plan. They give no information on their website about where their petfoods are made, so I assume they are all foreign made.

“All Butcher’s wet products are manufactured in the United Kingdom” according to their website. Founded in 1987, “Butcher’s Pet Care is a British company based in Crick, Northamptonshire, specialising in the production of high-quality foods for cats and dogs.” They also sell dry food for cats and dogs but I assume this is foreign made as they only say they make their wet foods in the UK on their website – http://www.butcherspetcare.com

Barking Heads & Meowing Heads (Pet Food UK Ltd) might make some of their cat food and dog food and treats in the UK, because they mention on their website that their new (as of August 2014) cat wet food is British made. They also talk about using British sourced ingredients on their website. However, there are no more references to British manufacture on their website, so you will need to check. Pet Food UK Ltd also have the brand AATU. The AATU twitter tagline is “Evolutionary Natural Feeding for Dogs & Cats. High Meat, Grain-free, containing fruits, vegetables, herbs & botanicals.” Wet and dry foods. It says on their website “Made in Britain using British ingredients”. True Instinct is a pet food brand owned by Nature’s Variety, a cat and dog food company in the USA. In the UK they seem to be part of Natures menu, whose brands are True Instinct, Country Hunter and natures:menu original. Founded in 1981 as Anglian Meat Products, Natures Menu according to their website in 2016 “Natures menu joins forces with Affinity Petcare and Natures Variety to develop a worldwide group of pet specialists in raw inspired nutrition”. They also say “Natures menu is a fully integrated supply business. We source and selected our own raw ingredients, we process and pack the foods we make and deliver the brands we sell direct to our customers on our own fleet of delivery vehicles…” Natures Manu have a factory in Norfolk and say they use “…locally sourced human grade meats and wholesome ingredients…” and they sell frozen raw foods and dry foods for cats and dogs. Symply Pet Foods Ltd make Canagan pet foods and Symply pet foods.

From what I can gatherSymply wet, dry and treats dog food and dry cat food is all British made, although they do not state this very clearly on their website. Country of origin information is given at the bottom of the page against individual products on the Symply website and everything I have found today (26/4/15) on their site was made in Great Britain.

Also, from what I can gatherCanagan dry food for cats and dogs is all made in Britain, but this is not explicitly stated on their website. They do tell us “We try to source as many of our ingredients as we possibly can from Great Britain, although some ingredients are simply not available in the UK in large enough quantities.” Canagan wet food is made in Thailand. If you check the underneath of the packaging of Canagan dry food it carries the words “Proudly Made in Great Britain” and the front of the packaging tells us the food is “made with natural produce fresh from the British countryside”. Stockists are listed on their websites and products are also from their websites and elsewhere online. Grain free. Canagan tinned dog food is made in Great Britain or New Zealand or in the “EU” (whatever that means, presumably somewhere in mainland Europe) depending on which flavour –

E Jeffries & Sons Limited (Jeffries Saddlery, Jefferies) was established 1820. They are a manufacturer of equestrian and sporting leather products and appear to maintain some production in the UK, although you will need to check before buying as no country of origin information is given on their website. They say 80% of their products are manufactured in the UK – “Unlike many companies today, we actually manufacture our own products in our own factory. In fact over 80% of the products in the current range are manufactured at our Lytham plant”. Carr & Day & Martin (branded Carr’s / Day & Martin’s / Carr & Day & Martin) used to make shoe polish in England, but as far as I am aware no longer do so, and now concentrate on horse care products – http://www.carrdaymartin.co.uk

Human chocolate contains Theobromine, a naturally occurring compound found in the cocoa bean, and it is this that is poisonous to dogs and cats. Instead feed your pet a suitable ‘safe’ alternative such as Good Boy dog-safe choc drops or Hatchwell Easter Eggs.

There are other hidden dangers to dogs, cats and other pets in certain foods, plants, drugs and insecticides for example, plus road accidents. You can find research and find advice on the internet, for example at Bluecross, the RSPCA, the VPIS and many other sites. Some of the most common, potentially severe cat and dog poisons reported to the VPIS, are listed on the RSPA and VPIS websites.
