British Made Small Electrical Items – Kettles, Toasters, Kitchen Items, Vacuum Cleaners (Hoovers), etc + kitchen tools and kitchenware

Chances are until just a few years ago that your small electrical items like kettles and toasters would have been made in the UK and lasted for years and years.  Chances are if you buy a kettle today it will be made in China and break within a short time.

British made kettles

Philips used to make electric kettles in the UK (I have a couple of old made In England Philips kettles and they are very well made and they are still working), but I checked with Philips who have confirmed that all Philips products are now made in the Far East. For example, there was a Philips household domestic appliances factory in Hastings on the south coast that made kettles and electric heaters and it closed in 2008.

Sainsbury’s Supermarket

Sainsbury’s – Sainsbury’s do have a policy relating to provenance and traceability of the food that is on their shelves and make a general commitment to buy British (they do not talk about buying locally on their website).   They say they want to work more closely with British farmers and that by 2020, they will double the amount of British food they sell.  There is no commitment to buy British in their non-food areas.  At least they are trying. I suggest you check where the things you buy are sourced and packaged. It is particularly good that on the Sainsbury’s website they give the country of origin for their own brand products (mostly only applies to their own brand products but that’s a good start) and they even sell British made kitchen pans. Well done Sainsbury’s.

Toilet Rolls (Toilet Tissue), Tissues, Wet Wipes, anti-bacterial hand gel, household clothes and Kitchen Towels produced in the UK

I noticed that on the pack of 4 Andrex toilet rolls I bought the other day (in October 2013) it says “Made in the UK and European Union”. It doesn’t say which!  In the past Andrex was always just made in the UK I think*. So, I suggest you buy a brand that is definitely made in the UK. Most still are, but you should check. The Waitrose own brand Essential range of toilet tissue for example is produced in the UK, as are the Tesco Spring Force and Tesco Luxury Soft ranges of toilet tissue in Tesco. Update 28/12/15 – the Tesco Spring Force toilet tissues are now marked “made in EU” – check what you are buying is British made each and every shop, because the supermarkets make changes.

Buy British made toilet tissue. Check the packaging carefully and make sure the tissue you are thinking of buying is made in the UK.

* Andrex (part of Kimberly-Clark) inform me that “all ANDREX toilet tissue are manufactured in the UK, except the Andrex Eco which is manufactured in Switzerland”. Good news then it seems for people who like Andrex toilet roll. The labelling is nevertheless very unclear. The same unclear labelling is used for Andrex wet toilet tissues.

Whereas some Kimberly-Clark products, such as the commercial toilet tissues below, are clearly labeled. The commercial toilet tissue below is also made in the UK.

Also, are your KITCHEN TOWELS made in the UK? The Waitrose Ultra Kitchen Towels I purchased today are but a lot of the kitchen towels on supermarket shelves is not. Please check before buying. Some other Waitrose tissue products are made in the UK, such as the Waitrose Essential Toilet Tissue mentioned above and those items pictured below, but do check carefully before buying – http://www.waitrose.com

Fairy Washing-Up Liquid, Fairy Laundry Detergent and Fairy Kitchen Soap and other Procter and Gamble products made in the UK. And Unilever products made in the UK

Fairy is a brand of washing-up liquid produced by Procter & Gamble in England.  Fairy is also a longstanding brand of non-biological laundry detergent.  Fairy was also a brand of a greeen household soap bar, but Proctor and Gamble have discontinued it.

Fairy Household Soap. No longer available in the UK and no longer made in the UK.

Fairy Household Soap. No longer available in the UK and no longer made in the UK.

I note the bottle of fairy (‘Professional’) washing up liquid I picked up today (4.1.12) at work simply states “made in EU” on it but does not say where in the EU it was made.  Rather uninformative and one can only assume this means it was not made in the UK 😦

The jubilee bottle below and the bottle of Fairy Liquid I have in the kitchen both state they are made in the UK.  The bottles I saw today (5.1.12) in Waitrose stated they were made in the UK.  I will not be buying any bottles of Fairy liquid that just say “made in EU”.

Procter & Gamble Co, also known as P&G, is an American multinational consumer goods company. Top marks to the company for maintaining some, not inconsiderable, production in the UK. “Procter & Gamble has been based in West Thurrock since 1937. Production at our factory began in September 1940 and the site has grown significantly over the years. Today, we manufacture Fabric & Home Care products such as Fairy washing-up liquid and Ariel, Bold, Fairy and Daz laundry detergent powders. P&G also has a Distribution Centre on site which manages across P&G’s total portfolio of products. We have 350 employees on site as well as hosting up to 800 contractors and third-party employees.” (January 2017).

Fairy Liquid Diamond Jubilee bottle, 5.6.12

I should also add that Unilever (British/Dutch company) produce detergent such as Persil and Surf in Warrington, Cheshire, as well as other Unilever products at various other locations in the UK. “Unilever is a British-Dutch multinational consumer goods company co-headquartered in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and London, United Kingdom. Its products include food, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products. It is the world’s third-largest consumer goods company measured by 2012 revenue, after Procter & Gamble and Nestlé.” “Unilever was founded in 1930 by the merger of the Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie and the British soapmaker Lever Brothers.” Unilever has various manufacturing sites in the UK, for example food and drink factories in Norwich and Trafford Park. For example their factory in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire produces Marmite and Bovril; Pot Noodles are made in Crumlin, South Wales; PG Tips is made in Manchester in the former Brooke Bond factory in Trafford Park (the best selling tea brand was sold to Unilever in 1983); Colman’s Mustard has been based in Norfolk ever since Jeremiah Colman started his mustard and flour business in 1814 in Stoke Holy Cross. The company was bought by Unilever in 1995 and continues to be produced on the original site; Walls – the ice cream – is a subsidiary brand of Unilever, and some of its products are made in a purpose built factory in Gloucester, in the Cotswolds; and Elmlea, the cream alternative made from buttermilk and vegetable oil, is produced at Unilever’s food factory in Purfleet, Essex. Again, top marks to the company for maintaining some, not inconsiderable, production in the UK. Disappointingly, Unilever do not give country of origin information on either their website or on the products themselves.
