British Made Diaries and Calendars – Please choose a British made diary

A proper paper diary is silent and unobtrusive in use; it has no batteries to go flat; it doesn’t break if you drop it or tread on it; it helps you remember things because you have actually written them down; you can write in it during meetings and so on (when your smart phone will be outside or turned off!); and things don’t get mysteriously deleted. There is the risk of losing your paper diary of course, and unlike a smart phone will not require a passcode, which is something to bear in mind.

When you are getting your next diary, planner or calander please choose a British made one. Before buying, check the inside or back cover and see where the diary you are looking at is actually made (printed and bound).

British Made Diaries – Get a diary for next year that is made in the UK

It’s that time of the year when you will want to buy a diary for next year. When you are getting your 2015 diary please choose a British made diary. Before buying, check inside and see where the diary you are looking at is actually made (printed and bound).

Sadly this year neither John Lewis nor Clinton Cards seem to be stocking any Letts or any other British made diaries. I got my Letts 2015 “made in Great Britain” 2015 diary in WHSmith (most of the other diaries they had were foreign made though). Note that Collins (Colins Debden) diaries are all foreign made these days.

It is still very possible to choose a UK diary that is actually made (printed and bound) in the UK and you can find a selection here.

Buy a British made dairy for next year.

Are the books you are buying printed and bound in the UK?

Are your British books and magazines really British?

There is a disappointing growing trend amongst publishers to have their books made abroad, so if you are buying a book make sure it is actually made in the UK (it will say inside somewhere where it is made).

For example I notice a lack of patriotism of late from Penguin Books and as a result of this from some of their authors too. Jamie Oliver’s cookbooks are mostly printed abroad, for example Cook with Jamie when I looked at it was printed in Italy. DC Thompson annuals are now printed in Italy too and I even saw in WHSmith the other day a British cookbook and a book celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee again both printed and bound abroad. Doreen Kindersley (who I think belong to Penguin) books are printed and bound in China. Lonely Planet books are made in Singapore. Collins Debden diaries are also made in Singapore. I was given a Bible the other day, published by Collins and printed in China. Harper Colin’s I-spy books are now made in China. Beatrix Potter books (sold by Penguin under the name of Frederick Warne and Co.) are now printed outside of the UK. Hodder and Stoughton are also printing at least some of their books outside of the UK now. Summersdale books are made in Singapore. Wiley are having at least some of their books typeset in India although printed in the UK.

The Great British Book of Baking (published by Michael Joseph Ltd; part of Penguin – as seen in WH Smith Trowell Motorway Services 7.10.13), to accompany the BBC TV series The Great British Bake Off – it's a disgrace to Penguin, WH Smith and the BBC that this book is made in China.

The Beano Annual by DC Thomson & Co. Ltd. - printed in Italy and BBC The Doctor Who Annual by Penguin - printed in China. A disgrace to DC Thomson & Co., the BBC and Penguin that these children's books are foreign made.

Clays of St Ives are one of the market leaders in book manufacturing and still print and bind their books in the UK – http://www.clays.co.uk

What’s with this new publishing trend of making books abroad? A couple of years ago you could pretty much guarantee that without fail any book published and sold in Britain would been printed and bound in Britain. Now it seems more and more books are being made abroad.

Can I ask you please to check where the book you are thinking of buying is printed and bound. If the book you want is not printed and bound in Britain perhaps you could consider not buying it or looking for an alternative and complaining to the publisher too. Thanks.

Letts UK

Don’t forget to make sure your diary for next year is made in Britain.

LETTS is the latest company to shift production back to Britain as rising costs in the Far East and improved technology back home have made manufacturing in this country attractive once again. Well done Letts. Letts make diaries, calendars, address books, visitor books and such. Letts do a range of diaries starting the week on a Sunday or a Monday, all made in the UK. Letts also own filofax. Letts have manufacturing facilities in Scotland and abroad.  Until recently Letts  products did not generally state country of origin, so you had to ask them direct if a product is made in the UK or not. I am pleased to say that for 2014 diaries Letts are clearly identifying which of their diaries are made in the UK with the words “Made in Great Britain” on the back.
