House of Hackney – mostly made in the UK interiors and fashion

House of Hackney are a luxury lifestyle brand founded in London in 2010. Despite the words “made in England” emblazoned across the top of their front website webpage, please note that not everything they sell is made in England!  However, a lot of it is and this site is well worth a look around. Some products are quite expensive though I warn you. I mean who in the right mind would pay £148 for a cushion!

  • House of Hackney clothing for men and women is all made in the UK (albeit in at least some cases using foreign milled fabric).
  • House of Hackney furniture is all made in England (except their tray tables).
  • House of Hackney crockery and glassware is made in England, as are their oven clothes, tea towels, aprons, table mats and coasters, tea cosies and trays. Note they cutlery is foreign made.
  • House of Hackney fabrics and wallpaper are made in England.
  • House of Hackney cushions are made in England.
  • House of Hackney lighting is made in Wales or Northern Ireland. Their candle holders and book ends are made in England, as are their curtains and blinds and their plant pots.
  • House of Hackney wash-bags and towels are foreign made.
  • House of Hackney bathroom accessories are made in England.

Wind turbines made in the UK, etc‏.

Boost

Boost Energy Phase Converter

Ampair design & make wind turbines in the UK and are the UK’s oldest surviving turbine manufacturer (Ampair, see www.ampair.com) having been making them since 1973. They are also the UK’s oldest manufacturer of single-to-three phase converters (Booster, see www.boost-energy.com ) which they have been doing since 1957. Basically they design & make light electromechanical machinery.  Ampair / Boost Energy continue to invest in their UK manufacturing operations as one of their Directors has commented on it on their website (see http://www.boost-energy.com/about-us ). The business exports a lot and that has been the foundation of how they have rebuilt the business – the approximate numbers are 30% sales to UK, 40% sales to continental Europe, and 30% to rest of world, and they have rebuilt the business to the point where they now employ about 20 people rather than the one person they employed ten years ago. Clearly there are other small wind manufacturers in the UK but it is pleasing to see both the Ampair wind turbines and Boost Energy manufacture in the UK.

Origin Doors – Quality Bi-folding Doors Manufactured in the UK

Origin Doors – Quality Bi-folding Doors Manufactured in the UK

Founded in 2002, Origin Doors are one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of aluminium folding sliding doors and design and manufacture all their products from their High Wycombe HQ. The family-run business was founded by cousins Neil Ginger and Victoria Brocklesby who noticed a gap in the market when they couldn’t find suitable bi-folding doors for a building project.

Origin now employ 88 people in the UK, including many members of Neil and Victoria’s family, and further staff are employed in sales offices in Dubai and Florida, where Origin distribute their doors to. Origin chose to manufacture products in the UK because this is where the company’s main market is, so manufacturing here ensures short lead times and total control over every aspect of the manufacturing process.

Neil Ginger, Origin CEO explains, “Every door we make is completely bespoke and made entirely to the customer’s specification, whether they want one set of doors or enough to cover the front of an entire building. This means that we take great care in manufacturing our doors and have strict quality control process in place so we deliver exactly what the customer wants. Manufacturing our products in the UK means that we can oversee this process and ensure that our customers receive the highest quality product with the highest level of customer service.”

Innovation is key at Origin and the company is the only bi-folding door company in the UK to offer a range of different coloured finishes for their bi-folding doors, including bright primary colours and subtle candy shades. The company also offers a ‘your lead time not ours’ service which means they can deliver doors when customers need them, whether it’s the next day, week or month – something which manufacturing in the UK makes possible.
