Lush have shops on the High Street and an online store selling quality handmade soaps, perfume, bath products, bath bombs, shaving cream, deodorants, make-up, toners, cleansers, moisturisers, toothy tabs, lip balm, spot treatment, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, styling gel, etc. and spa treatments. The Lush factory is in Poole, Dorset, England and I think all their products are made here. Fab. Their philosophy appears to be make local, so in other markets than the UK products may be made elsewhere.
Neal’s Yard make and sell organic natural health & beauty products. They use “high quality organic, natural and wild, plant-based ingredients with a view to safety, efficacy and biodegradability” and they also say on their website ” We use recyclable packaging, sourced wherever possible from the UK to reduce transport miles”. They have a “purpose-built eco-factory in Dorset”. The company was founded in 1981 in Neal’s Yard, near Covent Garden, London. The blue bottles are being made in the UK too now, in Yorkshire. Pretty much everything from Neal’s Yard is made in England. On their Facebook they say “Our Skincare is scientifically formulated and products made in our own Eco factory in Dorset.” On their YouTube channel they say “At Neals Yard Remedies we design, test and make our own products at our eco-headquarters and physic garden in Gillingham, Dorset” and they manufacture the majority of their products at their own factory in Dorset, UK.
I’ve shopped at the Body Shop for many years and pretty much everything I bought was always made in the UK. However I now notice that pretty much everything I bought the other day was made abroad, except for the deodorant I got which was made in the UK. The rest was made in Hungary, Switzerland or the USA. This is very disappointing and I will now be looking for a new supplier for my wash stuff. If you are buying anything in the Body Shop you will now need to check if it is from the UK or not, if you want to buy British. For the moment at least many products in the Body Shop are still made in the UK. Country of origin information is not given on their website. The Body Shop is owned by French company L’Oréal and many Body Shop products are now made in France.
I asked the Body Shop about manufacturing in the UK and this was their response – “We are a global retailer and as such manufacture our products in many countries” – basically they are saying they have shifted some or all production abroad – what a shame 😦 That said though, if you read the labels carefully, you can still buy British made products in the Body Shop.
Yardley holds 2 Royal Warrants.
On the Yardley website it says:-
“True to our heritage, we feel that it is important that as many of our products as possible are sourced in the UK and as of 2012 a large proportion (90%) continue to be manufactured in the UK with the majority of remaining products being made in the EU.”
Also, established in 1770 (as a chemist), Woods of Windsor now sells soaps, fragrances, bath products, hand cream and the like. I think there products are (at least mostly) made in England. They have a shop near Windsor Castle, in Windsor, England. They also sell Yardley products in their shop.
As far as I can work out (and it is by no means clear!) Yardley London and Woods of Windsor are owned by the Indian company Wipro. Yardley London is run as a disctinct entity, based at the Woods of Windsor shop in Windsor. However, another Indian company Lornamead owns Yardley in the Americas, Germany and Austria (they have a separate website – http://www.yardleylondon.com). There is no indication on their website of where Yardley Americas, Germany and Austria make their products.
